Ifs, Whys, and Hows February 16, 2003 - 8:33 a.m.

I'm always thinking in what-ifs.

What if oranges were purple.
What if dogs had opposable thumbs.
What if there were no such thing as hunger.
What if there's life on other planets.
What if things were different.

What-ifs go on and on. And with them, proof that possibilites are limitless. Stepping back and asking 'what if' can often help lead to a hidden outcome. What-ifs break down any situation, question, dilemma into a prism of options. When you see each and every possibility, things won't seem so... destined. Doomed. Permanent. If there's a way to get through a bad patch, what-ifs will certainly aid in finding it.

But what-ifs aren't always so pretty and resourceful.

What-ifs can add new questions and problems that may have never existed before. With all the many possibilities what-ifs can bring to the table, included is the overwhelming task of choosing and much confusion of making the 'right' choice.

The negative what-ifs cause people to linger and create even more negative what-ifs... so much negativity multiplying likes rabbits on Viagra in the spring. It just doesn't stop.

Considering the possible bad result, would it breach sanity to continue with the what-if's and the why's of your curious mind? Would it be so wrong to let yourself run with ideas, regardless of where they take you?

What if you stopped?
What if concepts weren't analyzed?
What if there were no more questions?
What if children didn't ask why the sky was blue?
What if things were different?
