Wasted Adventure July 10, 2003 - 11:25 a.m. We received a call shortly after Chris got home from work yesterday, asking if we were going to the movies. Pirates of the Caribbean had just opened, after all. He hadn't mentioned seeing it just yet and was asleep at the time of the call, so I didn't have an answer aside from 'not that I know of'. After an hour passed, I woke him up as requested and told him about the call. He mumbled some incoherencies of which I think included phrases like 'I thought about going' and 'Don't have the money'. He lingered on the brink of sleep for the longest time before finally getting up and calling to find out when everyone was going to meet up for the movie. They were trying for the 9:30pm showing. At two and a half hours long, that would get us out at midnight... then consider driving time, we'd get back home around 12:30am. Chris had to be up for work no later than 5:30am, and he can't risk missing a day or even being late, otherwise he loses his job. Five hours of sleep isn't unheard of for him, in fact, it's usually a common thing. Plus he'd already had a bit of a nap when he got home. We talked about it for a bit. Weighed the pros and cons. Finally, he decided we could wait and see it on the weekend. It wasn't imperative that we see it opening night. He no more than got the words out, and a commercial spot for the movie came on tv, taunting him. So, I got in the shower and proceeded to get ready to go. We headed for the bookstore, where everyone was meeting, then grabbed some food while we were waiting. Finally the time came for us to leave (later than I would have liked) and we headed to the theater. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a packed parking lot and crowds of people. We got our parking spot that was a two day hike away from the theater itself, and began our journey. Braving the wild for so long and coming out with only minor cuts and bruises, we made it to the ticket line. Stand in line, check the times, and mindless chatter while we wait for our turn. There's still a few people ahead of us, when we notice a lot of 'sold outs' instead of the actual time. The 9:30 display seems to have been replaced with words. Just in case we were reading the sign wrong (they don't leave it on one thing long enough), and because we were only a person away from the counter, we walked up to the ticket seller just to make sure. Yep. Sold out. And the next show was going to be at 10:30pm. We were already pushing it for the other show, there was no way we could wait around for this one. So we begin our trek back through the wilderness to our car. It was half way there that he says 'maybe we could have stayed for a different movie'. Little late now, buster. We got back home, got comfortable, and watched Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. There were no pirates, but we had fun playing the 'Who would play him/her in the live action movie' game. John Cusack would be Spike. Charisma Carpenter would be Faye Valentine. Ron Perlman could be Jet Black. And we figured Ed could be played by some unknown person, because we couldn't think of anyone for her (although the girl from I am Sam crossed my mind, she's probably too young). And the bad guy from this movie could easily be reproduced by the big bad from The Crow. While we're in the same entry as Pirates of the Caribbean, Becky's boyfriend (also a Chris) didn't seem to understand why so many girls would be wanting to see this movie. I don't know if he saw it one-sided as girls-don't-like-action-movies or if there was more to it, or simply joking around. But he seemed seriously incapable of comprehending that yes, girls will in fact love this movie. Girls will flock to see this movie. Why? Um... duh! Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom.... the theater will become a wet panty fest! I believe my exact words were 'This movie is a girl's wet dream'. So anyhow, we've still got to see Pirates of the Caribbean. And League of Extraordinary Gentlemen starts tomorrow. He's mentioned seeing a double feature of both. Good times.
