Shave and a Haircut November 05, 2003 - 11:17 p.m.

When I say 'I cut my hair', I literally mean 'I cut my hair'.

With the exception of maybe two times, I've been cutting my own hair since I was thirteen years old. I'll notice the dead or split ends and go 'Eh, time for another cut'. Given the length of my hair, and provided I'm only doing a trim, I have about a foot of hair to work with in the event that it isn't even. So eventually, it's even enough that I just don't care, while maintaining quite a bit of length.

About two or three weeks ago, I noticed the ends were looking pretty rugged, so I pulled out the scissors and got to work. I only chopped off about two or three inches. It's still past my waist. Though I keep thinking of cutting it much shorter, like to the middle of my back. If not shorter than that; I've toyed with the idea of cutting it above my shoulders for ages now.

When I cut it, it's always one length.

But this time, since I've cut it, it seems that every time I go into the bathroom and see the scissors sitting on the counter, I have to cut just a bit more. Not overall length, just towards the front. I started creating this layered effect in the front, just to have something different. Something other than a straight cut. Each time I cut it, those layers in front just get shorter and shorter with a more dramatic angle. It seems I'm never happy and am constantly cutting sections to get a certain look or to make things even out.

Tonight, I pulled the section that people usually cut into bangs. And I cut it really short. Well, comparatively short. When I tuck my hair behind my ear, it just barely stays. Even then, it doesn't always stay put unless it's muddled within the mass of long hair. When it's not tucked behind my ear, it reaches just past my chin.

I'm realizing now that this new chunk of hair is the length I keep thinking of cutting the rest of my hair. At the rate I'm going, it may only be a matter of time before all of it ends up that short.

Originally I had the intentions of cutting this new batch much shorter... so who knows where I'll go after this.

Unless I finally put the scissors away.
