Geek Cons are Better March 28, 2004 - 9:17 p.m. Trucker's convention was a total pain and the wrestling thing was canceled, meaning they got someone cheaper to work the event. Fine with me. Thursday was a pain and people were getting pissy because someone was letting them in without passes. Then, when they tried to come back in through my door, and I was actually doing my fucking job and saying they couldn't without said pass, they'd throw a fit saying they'd been in there all day. Some people even told me they'd bought something in there and wanted to prove it, as if that was supposed to make any difference. There were exceptions and some people were nice about things, but overall the crowd was mostly full of cock monkeys. After hearing Saturday was going to be a hundred times worse, I was so tempted to tell them I wasn't going to be there. But I figured I would wait and see how the next day went. Friday wasn't too bad. The crowd seemed much nicer about everything. I still had the random jackass, but it seemed like there were far less than the day prior. We kept catching people without a pass, and they let us know that there was someone at the back door just letting people in, and there was also someone on the other side of the building that was specifically saying they didn't have to get a pass. There was a bunch of other crap going on that only proved the other people weren't actually working, so I complained to our supervisor. Now, I normally wouldn't have said anything. But I was getting pissed off at having to fix everyone else's mistakes all day. My complaint didn't help. I decided to go ahead and go in on Saturday, and we were having some of the same problems. In fact, the guy in charge of the show started a lot of probems by taking people's tickets. The tickets they needed in order to get their pass to get in. So when they came to my door and explained this scenario - which the showrunner told us he had done, then told us we were to send these people all the way back to registration to fix what he did - I told them to just walk in and not worry about it. Once he completely fucked us up like that, everyone agreed it was pretty pointless for us to be there. So we became full slackers. I was still checking passes, but I let most of the people pass by. I figure, if this guy can't even follow his own rules which then makes our job more difficult and angers the attendees, why should we bother? I was so happy to work only eight hours that day as opposed to the eleven I worked the two days prior. Friday after work, I was pacing around in the exhibitor's wing while waiting for my mom to show up. After about a half hour or so, one of the guys still hanging around started talking to me then said 'You wanna make a quick 10, 15 bucks?" Insert sleaze joke here. Turns out he just wanted help rolling chammies for the next day. I helped for about 30 or 45 minutes and got fifteen bucks for it. So that was pretty cool. I was so tempted to pull an Amelie and help him then run off before he could even say thanks. But the need for money made me stick around. Last night I came home and worked on giving Lady a haircut. Today, I worked on it a bit more. She's not done, but I've got most of the major knots taken care of. As well as a blister on my thumb and index finger. Add the gash in my palm that Twink did when she was jumping up onto a table, and my right hand is pretty gimped up. Today Mom took me out shopping and I finally got to use my gift cards from Christmas. I got Geek Love and Tales of the Slayers #2 and wanted every other book I saw. While we were at Barnes and Noble, I was drooling over this kickass Scooby Doo chess set. I didn't have enough to get it; besides, I wanted books more. But it's so very awesome. One side is the good guys and the pawns are Mystery Machines. The other side are villains and the pawns are headstones. Then we went to Target and I got a computer game - Schizm: Mysterious Journey - and a nice black v-neck shirt. Before dropping me off here, we stopped at Walmart and my mom got a new watch and I got a new battery for my watch that decided to die just last night. I probably should have just gone for a new watch though. Let's see.... work sucked, got blisters, did some selfish shopping. Yeah, I think that about covers everything.
