Nonexistent Theological Context May 24, 2003 - 4:15 p.m.

The following is from an article in Orange County Weekly:

"... a not-so-subtle Biblical observation from Buffy’s sideman, Xander: 'You’re not the only one with powers, you know. You may be a hopped-up überwitch, but this carpenter can dry-wall you into the next century'..."

Biblical? I don't see how that's biblical in the slightest, as Xander is a carpenter. What, did I miss an episode where Xander was found out to have been the son of God? Whoa! Xander is Christ, and I never knew it!

Maybe I'm not seeing what the reporter intended. Maybe I'm fully missing some theological point. But I think it's really a matter of someone not doing their homework. Then again, even the fans that watch it every week may forget that the Scooby gang has to work normal jobs for their money. Saving the world and fighting evil aren't the best paying gigs.

Now that I'm thinking about it, did Whedon or any of the other writers ever bring religion into the show? Aside from Willow's wiccan beliefs and any mythology used to explain a demon. I don't recall any element of christianity ever once being voiced. Unless you want to consider 'heaven' to be a strictly christian concept.

Eh... I'm just complaining. I just don't like it when they turn an ordinary situation or phrase into something that it was never intended to be. But since I wasn't the one who wrote it therefore don't know what its original intentions were, I suppose I'm not really one to critique.

Yadda, yadda, yadda.

I'm still in mourning.
