Why I Want to go to Tech School. October 02, 2002 - 10:43 p.m. Big gimp out with the 'puter today. Well, last night really. We've been working with it since around 9pm yesterday. It's finally at a remotely functioning point. But he's wanting to do a complete system recovery. Ya know, complete wipeout. Starting over fresh. Simply because it's 'slower than it should be'. Uh...... okay. You figured out why Windows didn't even want to load, AT ALL... yet you won't attempt to solve the speed issue? I suggested a scandisk and defrag for the moment, and I think it's improved. But it may not be 'satisfactory'. So, we may have to delete everything. Even though we have the time and capability of backing everything up, it's still rather annoying. Particularly because I know there will be something that we'll forget to copy. All this, just to play the Sims. It was VERY slow. Lots of lagging and jittering people. No fun. The instructions manual suggested that the video drivers needed to be updated. He had been meaning to update it for quite awhile and figured this would be an excuse to do so. But that new driver is what fucked it up. Apparently the bios didn't register any video driver above 4.0, the version we needed, so we downloaded the newest bios. Or so we thought. That fucked it up even more. Somehow. FINALLY, after lots of starting and restarting the computer and calling the supposed 'computer-god-hotline' (with no help)... he somehow managed to make it into Windows and reloaded the old video driver, which worked. It's functioning, although on a slow-mo level. The one good thing I can see out of a system recovery.... we're going to attempt an upgrade to XP Pro. I may just be able to deal with losing a few files for that.
