On the Bright Side February 14, 2004 - 1:55 p.m. Okay, after sleeping and everything, the Angel cancellation shock has worn off a bit. I'm still upset with WB, because they kept saying great things about the show and putting on this front that made it seem like there was no problem with having another season. But now that I've thought about it, I'm glad that they at least gave Joss some notice so that he could make any needed changes to the end of this season, to accomodate a series finale. And by the sound of things, they seem to be on board with the idea of still doing Angel made-for-tv movies, which would just be random double episodes that would continue the story. If they follow through with that idea and aren't just saying it to blow smoke up everybody's asses, then that'd be cool. It's much better than no story at all. Besides, even though I don't see it happening, there's still the possibility that they'll find another network willing to air it. I'm oh-so-tempted to join the campaign of people that are planning on sending in hair gel as a sign of their dedication to the show, simply because I think it's funny. I don't think it will honestly make any changes, but it's an inventive way of showing support. I would do this, if it weren't for the cost of buying the gel, packing it, then paying for shipping. The point would not be as effective if I were to send it 'postage due'. I'm just very grateful that they were able to continue through five years worth of good television. That's not a very easy task. Since this has been announced, the entire Angel community has been in an uproar. When Buffy was ending, everyone was upset, but I think most people understood and felt the same as Joss and crew - it was time. Yes, there's always more story to tell, but it's better to quit while you're ahead. That saga of the story was folding onto itself and was nearing that feeling of completion. Things were coming full circle, and it was time for change. The story is never over, but that part of it was. And it ended well. Besides, it was their decision to end. The creator. The star. They decided and that was that. It wasn't a network declining the ability to air the show, it was them deciding to stop making it. But with Angel, everything felt open and unresolved. There's so many things to cover that don't seem at all possible with only a handful of episodes left. And considering there's only about three episodes left to write, that I'm aware of, there really isn't a lot of time to conclude much. Buffy, while sad, ended when it was supposed to. Angel's death seems very premature. I'm just hoping it's more of a short coma or long nap as opposed to death, so that it has the chance to later end as it should. Much like Cordelia.
