Stay Soused, Ponyboy November 09, 2002 - 3:59 a.m. Have you ever heard a new word? I mean now that you're older and not in school where you're forced to broaden your vocabulary. A new word that you've never heard before. And not slang, but a genuine piece of intelligible language. You're amazed by this new thing. Your mind makes a note of its spelling, pronunciation, and definition. You want to include it into your everyday vocabulary as soon as possible, but find that it's not fitting today. Then suddenly, this word you've never heard, is mentioned several times within a day or two of its first exposure. Have you always overlooked it, yet it has really been right in front of your face the whole time? Or is this genuinely the first time your ears/eyes have come across it? And its merely coincidence that it was used so frequently only moments after learning it? My new word at the moment is 'soused'. You'd think as often as we've mentioned getting or being drunk, and all the other words for it, that I would have heard this particular word before. But not until about two days ago, when Chris said it. I originally thought he was saying 'sauced' in a silly way. We do that a lot, like pronouncing the 'c' in 'scissors'. We've always done this because… well… I really don't know why. We just do. Cause we're a couple of goofy retards. So I question him on it, jut to make sure, and that's when I learn yet another of a trillion English words. Since then, I've heard it on some random TV show and just read it in The Outsiders. I'm going to continue to let myself believe that I've never been exposed to it. I'll feel like less of an idiot. I guess this is what I get for not reading the book in school. I blame the teachers though… Damn public education. Typical, she had us watch the movie instead.
