A New Addition. August 09, 2002 - 3:18 p.m.

There are few things in life as sweet as a tiny kitten asleep in your lap. Mixed with the fact that the only sounds at the time are of the purring kitten and the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, it is a very peaceful moment.

When I came home, my mom held the door open for me and told me to watch my step. I just kind of looked at her.

"Mom, we've lived here for 14 years. If I'm not aware of that tiny step into the door by now, then you need to find someone else to take care of you when you're older, because I'm obviously not capable."

I'm not responsible for the various tracks my mind takes, regardless of where it leads.

I set my stuff down in the kitchen and stoop down to get Twink, the cat, when I see it just out of the corner of my eye. The reason I'm supposed to 'watch my step'. The thing that's causing Twink to act strange and run away. This little blur of white.

We now have a kitten.

As if we needed another pet. At least I'm not responsible for bringing this one into the house. Isn't it usually the parent telling the child 'no more strays' and not the other way around?

She's sweet though. And she balances the equation - Two humans, two dogs, two cats. She's 3 months old. White with a black tail and black spots on her back legs and face. We don't have a definite name for her yet. My mom said Chiquita Niņa. I gave an emphatic no. Now we're toying with the idea of calling her 'Oreo', as cheesy as it may be.

Maybe I could talk my mom into calling her 'Zero'. Ya know, the ghost dog from Nightmare Before Christmas.

I doubt she'll go for that though.
