The Nanny Diaries March 18, 2003 - 11:58 a.m.

I finally read The Nanny Diaries this weekend. And if you're wanting to read it, you may not want to read this any further, as it may contain some spoilers. Small spoilers, but spoilers none-the-less.

Great, hilarious, funny stuff.

On the above link, it states that Miramax has already purchased the rights to make it into a film. And the two authors are writing their next book.

I'm hoping it's a sequel to this book. Following the same character. Now I find myself wondering if she ever sees Grover again, how her apartment hunt goes, her relationship with H.H., if and how Grace and George get along together (the dog and cat) and of course her future career. Which is still child orientated, so it wouldn't be like straying from the original premise at all.

That, and I want to see some hardcore karma... okay, vengeance... flung into the direction of Mrs. X.

What an utter evil, blind, lying, useless bitch! She was so oblivious to anything that even remotely resembled reality. There were so many times that I put myself into Nanny's shoes and wanted to strangle the woman. Oh!! And then it ends with her 'surprise' for Mr. X and the expectation of another kid. I think she was only lying anyhow. Her way of keeping him around. Too many girls do that, and I wouldn't put it past this psycho nutbag to do it either. Or I'm completely wrong and they talk about Grayer's little brother or sister in a sequel.

The humor in this book was fantastic. The added thoughts that anyone in her situation would have felt as well, intermingled into the dialog. Pure brilliance. At times I felt Nanny was a little highstrung, but understanding stress the way I do and imagining having to deal with the Ice Queen, it's completely understandable.

I definitely can't wait for a sequel, so I'm hoping very much that the book they are currently working on is the next part of the story. If there is going to even be a next part. And the whole time I was reading it, I kept picturing it as a movie. There's quite a lot to cover, so a lot would have to be omitted to make the film... but seeing that story on screen just seems so cool.

And I realize I'm rambling about a book. A book that some people may read and say 'Yeah. Okay. What's the big deal?'. But I like books. Especially this one. It was fun and easy to read. No earth shattering plot. No pretentious philosophy on life. No real attitude-adjusting, life-altering moral (unless you're like the bitch and now see the error of your ways). It was just a simple book, with a simple story and simple humor.

I wish more books were written like this one.
