For the longest time, I've wanted an aquarium. An awesome tank of aquatic wildlife. Not only fish, but plants as well. Vivid colours moving about like live art. Fishies swimming, plants swaying, lights reflected off of the water ripples.

But though fish are classified as pets, even I would call them pets, they are not true pets. Especially if you have no other pets and you refer to your fish if asked if you have pets. I think if you have other animals, like a dog or cat, you can include fish in your list of pets. But if fish is all that you have, then it just doesn't seem appropriate.

'Do you have any pets?'

'Yeah, Herman and Gilbert. My fish.'

Pets are soft. Cuddly. You teach them tricks. Pets have emotions and personality. They show expressions, though in ways varying our own. If dealing with the right people, pets become an extension to the human family. You bond with a pet. You can, well, pet a pet.

Fish are not pets. Fish are exhibits that you feed. They are a showcase. A pet for people that don't like real pets. A starter pet for children. Fish are neither soft, cuddly, nor pettable.

Maybe I'm completely wrong. Maybe my views are skewed because I've never had a fish of my own. Despite these possibly warped ideas, I still want that aquarium. I want a living exhibition that I have to feed and clean and name. Another pet that I can add to the list.

'I have two dogs, two cats, and Herman and Gilbert. My fish.'
