Certified genius.

Certifiably insane.

Very thin line between the two.

I've come to believe that either attribute requires some of the other to be truly legitimate. If you're a true genius, then you have some level of insanity. If you're insane, there's some genuis hidden in there somewhere.

So either term could be considered both compliment and insult. If you're called one, then the other lurks just behind it. Whether anyone's aware of it or not, it's still there. Sometimes it's more prominent in certain individuals. So much so, that it's hard to tell which holds more bearing to the person. Are you nuts or brilliant? Certain people straddle that line with the utmost of balance, exhibiting both traits equally. In these cases, it's hard to say whether they should be given an award or be locked away in a padded cell.
