I Can't Even Make Sense of What I'm Saying April 03, 2004 - 6:01 p.m.

I just saw a review on tv for Hellboy and thought it was funny because the people complained that there was too much going on during the movie. In my last post, I mention how I thought it was odd to have only one main plot with little going on in the background.

Two completely different opinions going on there.

My thing is, that I don't fully consider the character interactions that took place as main subplots. They were subplots, yes, but they didn't feel as involved. It seems like those things were expressed in such a way that you weren't making a mental note of situations, instead everything just seemed natural.

Like, they were telling a story, these are the facts, now lets get to the real story.

I really think I've just gotten used to following several stories during one movie or show. Maybe I've become desensitized to character development as plot, but I can't seem to consider relationships, platonic or otherwise, as plot themselves unless they are either effected by a situation or effecting one. This plot caused these people to get together. Or, because these people got into a fight, this plot started.

I know I suck at explaining this. Relationships are subplot, but only in a minor way. In my mind, that is. They're like... sub-subplots. They're part of the story and they determine how characters interact with each other, but unless they effect any outcomes, they aren't part of the real story being told, just part of the character.

Bah. By saying it that way, it makes it seem like I don't think that element is important to a story.

Unless a relationship directly effects the main plot of a story, then it's just a character trait and not a subplot... therefore, it doesn't count when you're thinking of what happened in the movie. Getting to know the characters and following a story are often two seperate parts to the film.

I should just stop typing now.
