Hooked on Phonics Worked for Me October 03, 2002 - 6:31 a.m.

I'm a slow reader. I'm not afraid to admit it. But I would like to change it.

I tried the eyeQ demo. I saw it on an infomercial and being the gullible, naive girl that I am, I thought I'd check out the website.

I first read about Ben Franklin's modest apparel and how the French just ate it up when he was there... to the point of near worship. Then I read a bit about Sleepy Hollow, mostly stuff dealing with the school children and parts of the legend itself. Then there was a bit of The Wizard of Oz, where they met the Cowardly Lion, fell asleep in the field of poppies, then entered the Emerald City (receiving glasses to block the brightness... even Toto.) Then it finished with an anecdote about Chopin completely mesmerizing people with his music. Some cabby-type guy got pissy about losing his customers to the music, then they made it more than worth his while with food and stuff.

I started at 233 WPM and went to 301 WPM. In seven minutes.

That's not really enough to make me shell out the money that I don't have, but I thought that was still pretty cool. If nothing else, I can use the demo occasionally and maybe increase my reading speed a bit that way.

I'm such a loser.
