Guilt Weighs Heavy January 14, 2003 - 12:58 a.m.

Guilt should be the eighth deadly sin.

Not for those you feel it. But for those who inflict it.

It seems that the people from Three's Company have all felt unnecessary guilt in the past few days.

If you stop and think about it, it's quite a common emotion in day to day life.

But as I've said about many things, it seems to be a societal issue. We've been trained to believe we can be perfect. We can make anyone and everyone happy. Nothing's impossible. We are the end all of the best creatures with no flaws. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

We're humans.

So this is impossible.

But the way we're raised and what we're taught anymore, makes us think that there's nothing we can't accomplish. Who comes up with this bullshit? Thinking like that only sets yourself up for failure.

I'm not saying we should always be pessimistic, I'm just saying not to expect the best. Because you'll always be disappointed with second best.

And when you just cannot achieve that highest of the high goals, then you feel guilty. You feel like you haven't done your job in life. Like you've let so many other people down, just by failing.

First of all, if you're doing something that will lead to the status of either 'failed' or 'passed', then other people's emotions shouldn't have a damn thing to do with it. This something is a purely selfish act, and it needs to be. It's YOUR life, you have to do things in it that may be considered 'selfish'. It's required of you, and not by society. It's required of you as simply a human.

So anyhow, other people or events always have a way of making you feel guilty about something. Of course, it's not always intentional. It's just our perception of it because we feel as though we've let someone down and we didn't try hard enough and we shouldn't feel a particular way. Have whatever emotions you want, but don't feel guilty about it.

Then you have the people that are martyr's and just love to pour on the guilt-complex.

People like that just need to be bitch slapped. Passive agressive bastards.

Of course, I guess all this talk is making me a hypocrit. I'm constantly feeling guilty for the stupidest of things. No logic can ever change that.
