Fray the Lurk Slayer May 15, 2003 - 7:40 a.m.

I can't believe I'm actually awake this early, having woken up completely on my own. Of course, the lazy slacker in me wants to go back to sleep. But the somewhat ambitious side is telling me there are things I could do. For once, I'm going to listen to that ambitious voice. That is, until my lazy side takes over and demands I take a nap later.

I watched Dawson's Creek last night. The series finale. It was surprisingly good. Actually, TBS will be showing it again in about two hours and I'll probably have it tuned in. Not like there's much else on tv right now anyhow.

The moment I saw Doug walk up to Jack's car, I knew. Yet I still laughed my ass off when it was made more than obvious. Pacey tormented Doug with this since the very beginning. I had been expecting something like that to happen sooner, but it never did. And at the end, the old couple on the beach that were genuinely aawwww-ing at them. That was just too cute.

The whole thing with Jack telling Jen she was his soulmate. *sniffle* My eyes actually started to tear up a bit at that scene. Also, faghag = soulmate. It was perfect that Jack now has a child to raise essentially as his own. Not being able to have kids like a normal relationship, it was very fitting to leave the story with him as a father.

And I knew Joey would make the right decision at the end. I'm proud of her.

Before the show, Chris went to pick up dinner for us. As I still wasn't feeling well, he made me stay home. I used the time to take a desperately needed shower.

He came back with more than Taco Bell. A two liter of root beer for him. A case of grape soda for me, because I mentioned I was actually craving it. Strange, since I thought I hated the stuff. He also felt the urge to stop at the comic book store where he picked up the first three issues of Fray. Just for me.

Fray. Joss Whedon's comic book about a futuristic slayer, Melaka Fray. Nineteen years old, kickass hair, runner [thief] on the lower level of the city. This story includes hovercars and natural mutants. The world is completely devoid of anything magical or demonic. Until recently. There wasn't a slayer for about two hundred years. Well, there were slayers, they were just never called or trained, hence didn't know they were actually part of some higher lineage. Fray is called.

Her acting Watcher is pretty badass. Her real watcher, whom you only see in a few panels, is a nutbag. Any existing watcher in this time period is literally a 'fanatic and lunatic'. They drove themselves to insanity while waiting for demons to make themselves known again.

"Okay. I'm supposed to fight the coming onslaught of lurks and I'm being taught by a sarcastic goat-thing whose idea of training is throwing scrap metal at me because the actual good guys all went crazy waiting for the monsters to come back."

"Yes."

"Just checking."

Oh, and there's even mention of the dreams that are used in the Buffy movie. "In your dreams, you're someone else. A slave. A princess. A girl in school in a sunlit city." The slave and princess were in the movie. 'Girl in school in a sunlit city' That's obviously Buffy. Sunlit city... Sunnydale.

There are only eight comics in this series and during the third one, she's just giving in and allowing herself to be trained. At the very end, they leave you wondering what's going to happen when she has to face what seems to be the head lurk. [lurk is what they call vampires] This head lurk is also the same one that killed her brother, right in front of her.

Oh! And Loo! She's way cute. A one armed little girl with ADD. She rambles like mad and does that whole stream of conscious thing while being tough and looking up to Melaka, who is very sisterly to her.

I'm dying to read the rest of the issues. There are currently four more out now, and number eight comes out next month.

I haven't seen the axe/scythe thing from Buffy yet. She does use a tasergun though. 'What are bullets?' And they briefly mention the end of the slayers and demons. In that panel, they have a silhouette of the slayer and she has an axe, so it could be the mystical weapon. Or just an ordinary axe. She has a stake in one hand and the axe in another, so it's probably just an ordinary axe.

"A slayer, possibly with some mystical allies, faced an apocalyptic army of demons. And when it was done... they were gone. All demons, all magicks, banished from this earthly dimension."

"And the slayer? Did she..."

"I do not know if she lived. But, the demons being gone, she was the last to be called."

Mystical allies... could be Buffy. Could even be some slayer generations ahead of Buffy. Actually, if she was the last to be called, then it couldn't be Buffy, it would have to be Faith, unless it's someone years down the line.

I don't think this spoils anything storywise for the series finale of Buffy. If this demon-go-bye-bye ending were to happen, the next season of Angel could get pretty boring. That would also mean Angel, Spike, and Lorne wouldn't be around. No Angel, no show called Angel.

Anyhow, I'm loving the comics so far. I read somewhere that Joss is going to do more in the comic world. Could be Buffy, Angel, more Fray, or something completely different. Fray spawned from the idea of doing a Faith comic spin-off. He may not even do anything related to the Buffyverse. There's Firefly too.

With my Scooby Comics, which I'm way behind on, and all the Buffy comics, which I only have a few graphic novels so far, and now Fray, I'm just wanting more and more. I'll have to finally get a comic box soon. Yay! Even if it will be a short one.

It sounds odd, but I've wanted a comic box for ages now. I've wanted to get stickers and markers and decorate it and be able to point to it, proudly stating how 'Those are mine', while being able to open it and read any one of the colorful stories that are hidden inside whenever I want.

Yeah. I'm a geek.
