Displacement May 06, 2003 - 2:08 p.m.

Chris picked me up after work yesterday and we went to the new A&W to eat. I was surprised to even hear from him because he usually waits to pick me up on Tuesdays. It was a nice surprise.

We got here, I got to finally shower and use a real non-porta-potty type bathroom, and relax in a comfy house with air conditioning. While waiting for my shows to come on (shows Chris doesn't watch with me) we were watching cartoons and I was looking around the room.

It's a tiny room, meant as a bedroom. Very tiny room. One window, four outlets. Picture a decent sized master bathroom. Crammed into this tiny room is a desk with a computer, a nice sized office chair, a couch, a tv, a huge bookcase, and boxes of comics. As well as stacks of videos, cds, magazines, collectors cards, books, games... lots of stuff. And not much extra space.

So I asked him what it would take to get the room organized. I'm all about organization and things having their 'place'. I think I'm really trying to get that here because he will allow it, whereas my mom seems to want the complete opposite. At least, she's not made the effort to prove otherwise.

He mentioned needing a few more bookshelves, but when looking around, neither of us could really figure out where they would go. That's when I started verbally moving things around. I pointed to areas and told him what he needed to set things up. Told him he needed a corner entertainment center for the tv and vcr, which would allow additional space for games, movies, and even books and magazines. I told him he could add shelves right onto the wall, just above the computer, to use for puter stuff. I mentioned the possibility of other shelves done in weird ways. But more importantly, I told him he needed to move the huge bookcase that was right next to the desk.

This thing is right on the desk. You can't move the chair to the left, because it hits the shelf after a mere 30 degree turn. Half the time you turn to face the computer, and your elbow will hit the shelf. Stupid funny bone and it's lack of humor. And if you do manage to turn the chair all the way to the left, then the back of the chair gets caught just under one of the shelves, so when you move it, it dislodges the shelf and knocks down the figures sitting on it. This shelf... is annoying.

I guess by talking with him about it, he got inspired to change the room. At least clean it up a bit. So he goes into the kitchen and grabs a few trash bags and starts picking up. Next thing I know, he's moving the shelf. And, after moving it with everything on it, he cleans the shelves off, dusts, and reorganizes it.

All he did was move the shelf to the adjacent wall, and now the room feels so much better. It's more open. It's brighter. I can move the chair as much as I want without hitting anything. It's amazing how effective the smallest change really is.

And now I'm just rambling because I'm finally sitting at a computer again. I need to get away and do my exercises and some dishes, but I just can't seem to make myself do so. Maybe I'll set up a few downloads, then I can use that as an excuse to walk away.

Yeah. That'll work.
