Dead Tired March 30, 2004 - 8:55 a.m.

I'm a night owl. Always have been. I remember being six years old and having school the next morning. Everyone in the house was asleep. It's like 1 a.m., and I'm up watching Return to Oz on the Disney Channel.

Your average six year old isn't up at one in the morning. Especially on a school night.

When I was around twelve, my mom worked at a uniform retail shop. I always went to work with her, after school, and I would work too. They would pay me out of petty cash. I would enter the receipts - which were hand written - into the computer, because I typed faster than any of the employees. I would help tag clothes and keep the store neat. I would even help costumers find things. When we worked there, it seemed like we always worked very late at night. There was just always something that needed to be done.

One night we had inventory to do, and again I was there to help. We were doing inventory until six in the morning. I remember we had an hour or so before I had to be at school, so we decided to go get something to eat before dropping me off. Not getting any sleep didn't bother me.

In high school, it was normal for me to stay awake all night long, go to school, then come home and take a nap.

Whether it's sleeping during the day or just going to sleep super late, I'm a night person. Simple as that.

This past weekend, I was going to sleep around 10 p.m. and waking up at 5 a.m. I'm used to not even going to sleep until around three hours after I was waking up. Yet, that transition seemed flawless and simple at the time.

Now I'm stuck in this in-between, always tired phase.

Yesterday, I woke up around eight in the morning, then suddenly got dead tired another twelve hours later. So tired, there was no fighting it. I ended up sleeping until 1 a.m. then playing on the computer for awhile. Sure enough, another four hours later, and I was fighting sleep again. Now I'm awake, and still yawning.

Who knows how long I'll manage this time around.

It's all because I was sleeping at night and working during the day last weekend. My body's going 'What the fuck was that shit about?' It didn't appreciate the change in shifts very much.

Neither did I.
