Continuity June 13, 2004 - 9:00 p.m.

I keep forgetting to mention it, but last week I finally got the exclusive My So-Called Life lunchbox and bonus disc that I was promised almost two years ago.

It's really awesome, but you can tell not a lot of effort went into putting the thing together. Not the best craftsmanship. And I haven't even checked the disc yet, but it seems to include minimal bonuses. Funny, considering it's a whole disc just for bonus material.

Regardless, I'm happy to finally have both. And they still rock.

Yesterday we went to see Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Shrek 2. The latter was really funny and loaded with movie spoofs. And for someone who watches a lot of movies, it was fun to pinpoint all those little moments and what movie they originated in.

I loved Harry Potter, no surprise. Even though I really enjoyed it, I can't decide if I liked how they changed things. First of all the look. No big complaints, only minor things. Like, they moved Hagrid's hut and the Whomping Willow. And the really awesome courtyard they were always in seemed out of place. Really fucking cool, but out of place somehow. Maybe it's just because we never saw it before, now we're seeing the kids constantly there. And it was good to see the kids in more modern clothes. At the same time, I think that bit of modernization kind of kills some of the 'magic' I felt from the first two movies. The shots used to show that time had passed were fantastic. It really helped show that the story was taking place over a year's span whereas before, everything seemed to take place in no time at all.

Continuity. There was so much that was different than the book. Big, significant things, in some cases. I'm torn on how I like that. As I was watching the movie, I couldn't help but sigh or make other little noises when something had been changed. I was annoyed. But there's also that side that thinks it's really cool to see the story played out a different way, but still having the same ultimate outcome. It's a nice way for the movie and book to stay two seperate things.

Chris and I went on for like an hour, pointing out the differences and things that were left out of the movie. And though I would have liked to have seen it just as the book was written, I like that there were differences. I like that it forced us to think and compare and analyze. It gave us a reason to talk about it further instead of commenting on how it was a good movie then talking about something entirely different.

** Slight Spoiler **

I still say Lupin could have at least mentioned how he was one of the creators of the Marauder's Map. That would explain why he knew how to work it, and it could then be assumed that the other people responsible were his best friends - Padfoot, Prongs, and Wormtail. Just the smallest line thrown into the mix would have fixed everything. Further details about Animagus and who Prongs was, could be easily and quickly explained in the next film. Also, it really bugs me that the very first thing we see in the movie, is a fuck up. Harry is studying under his blankets. In the book, he uses a flashlight. In the movie, he's using his wand and a spell. But... Harry gets in trouble if he uses magic outside of school. So, he would have gotten in trouble for using the wand for light! That's a pretty big fuck up for such a minor thing simply because it goes against the existing mythos.

I feel like the biggest dork, picking it apart like this. But it's also pretty fun.
