An Ice Storm January 28, 2004 - 1:53 p.m. Let's see... Work this past weekend. Friday and Saturday, only four hours each day. It was taking tickets for Arenacross, which is kids on dirtbikes. So the place stunk of exhaust which means I'll be letting my clothes soak for awhile before actually washing them. Also, they had the majority of the doors open for this event - maybe to help air the place out - so it was freezing the entire time. Trying to tear the tickets was almost like trying to read at my mom's house. Almost. My fingers were just tense, instead of feeling empty and tense. When I'm at my mom's house, my hands feel like nothing but bone and flesh. No blood, tendons, or anything. We were supposed to work Sunday morning as well, but the city was suddenly covered in a sheet of ice and my mom wasn't going to try to drive on it. Which was for the best, as the ice only got thicker. No rain. No snow. Just ice. While I was thanking the ice for keeping me away from that place, I was also cursing it because that meant I had to stay at her house that much longer. I spent the entire day curled up under a huge pile of blankets. Six blankets, three of which were folded in half. As long as I didn't move and kept the blanket covering most of my head as well, I was more than warm. Chris called to let me know he broke the refrigerator. He was defrosting the freezer with a knife, as usual, and punctured the wall which hit the freon line. We now have a dead fridge and no money to get a new one. Well, he will in a week or two. But that means paying my taxes/licensing that's well overdue will have to wait. Yet again. If it hasn't already gone into litigation. Which could be and I would never know because I'm rarely told when I get mail, unless it's a package. In the meantime, it looks like we're living off soup and other shelf items. By Monday evening rush hour, the roads were clear enough that my mom felt comfortable driving. So she brought me back to Chris' and we got here just in time for pizza. I was here for just over an hour when Becky called and said she needed someone to be at her apartment the next day so that they could install the cable and phone. Seeing this as a way of putting use to my uselessness, I said sure. Even though it meant staying there two nights and not watching one of my shows with Chris. But as it turned out, I didn't get to watch my show at all, because she fucked something up on her account and almost lost her job because of it. Which then led to them cancelling the installation. No cable means no tv programming whatsoever on her television. Also, no internet and no phone. On the plus side, this allowed me the time to read nearly half of a book. When I got home this morning, Chris had Taco Bell for me and a description of what I missed on our show. By the sound of it, I'm very sad to have missed it. Smallville and Angel are on tonight and we'll certainly be watching. Andrew and an angsty vampire slayer are on tonight's episode. So that's awesome. And tomorrow's my birthday, though I don't expect anything super. Especially considering the sudden drought of available funds. It's nice to picture a nice dinner and a present or two, but they aren't important. Besides, we can have a nice dinner and buy something for ourselves whenever the bills are caught up again. And we'll probably do just that. Past birthdays in mind or not. Despite all the dishes that need to be done, all the garbage that needs to be picked up and taken out, and having to deal with the mess and loss of the fridge... I'm oh-so-happy to be back.
